碘的化学性质不如同族单质氟气、氯气、液态溴活泼，但在化学反应中它也可以表现出由-1到+7的多种化合价，单质时为零价，它的化学性质可以概括为以下几个方面。
一、单质碘与淀粉发生反应，变成蓝黑色。
二、一般能与氯气反应的金属（除了贵金属）同样也能与碘反应，只是反应活性不如氯气。例如碘单质常温下可以和活泼的金属直接作用。
三、一般能与氯气反应的非金属同样也能与碘的单质反应，由于碘单质的氧化能力较弱，反应活性不如氯气，所以需要在较高的温度下才能发生反应。例如它与磷作用，只生成三碘化磷，而磷在氯气中燃烧则生成五氯化磷。
四、碘与水的反应：碘在水中的溶解度最小，仅微溶于水，溶解度是0.029g/100g水。碘与水不能发生像氟气与水发生的氧化还原反应。但是碘与碱可以发生自身氧化还原反应，生成碘酸盐与碘化物。如：
